Vietnamese Football: The Journey to Assert Continental Status and the Aspiration to Reach the World Stage
Vietnamese football is witnessing one of the most dynamic periods of development in its history, as national teams continue to achieve impressive results in regional and continental arenas. From humble beginnings, the country's football has gradually asserted its position, built trust among fans, and opened new horizons for the future.
Looking back at the journey so far, it is clear that the pivotal change has come from systematic youth development and a long-term development strategy. The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) together with training centers such as PVF, HAGL JMG, Viettel, and emerging academies have produced a generation of players with good technique, tactical thinking, and remarkable competitive composure. Figures such as Nguyen Quang Hai, Nguyen Cong Phuong, Doan Van Hau, Nguyen Tien Linh, and more recently young talents making their mark in international tournaments have demonstrated the effectiveness of this strategy.
The success of the national team under foreign coaches such as Park Hang-seo, Philippe Troussier, and currently Kim Sang-sik shows integration and learning from advanced football. The combination of modern tactical thinking from foreign coaches with the fighting spirit and technique of Vietnamese players has created a distinct identity that is difficult to defeat. Achievements such as the 2026 AFC U23 Championship runner-up finish, the 2026 AFF Cup title, reaching the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia, and convincing performances at the Asian Cup are the clearest evidence of this remarkable progress.
Besides the men's team, Vietnamese women's football has also made a strong mark by qualifying for the 2026 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand for the first time. This historic event is not only a source of pride for the nation's sports but also a great inspiration for the women's football movement, contributing to promoting gender equality in sports. Players such as Huynh Nhu, Chuong Thi Kieu, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung, and the next generation have inspired millions of young girls across the country to pursue their football dreams.
The V.League 1 national championship has also made significant strides in professional quality, competitiveness, and commercial appeal. Investment from clubs such as Hanoi FC, Cong An Hanoi, The Cong Viettel, LPBank Hoang Anh Gia Lai, and Nam Dinh has raised the overall standard of the league. The presence of quality foreign players and naturalized players contributes to increased competitiveness while also posing requirements for localization and sustainable young talent development.
Refereeing and league management are also gradually being improved toward greater professionalism and transparency. The application of VAR technology in some matches and solutions to enhance operational quality are positive signals, though there remain challenges regarding cost, human resource training, and infrastructure. In addition, issues of on-field violence, negativity, and organization need to be further tightened to protect the image of the country's football.
One notable bright spot is the development of community football and school football movements. Tournaments for youth and children's age groups are increasingly emphasized, creating healthy playgrounds and stepping stones for future talents. Private football academies and internationally standardized training centers also contribute to diversifying development resources, helping to discover and nurture potential players in all regions.
However, Vietnamese football still faces no small number of challenges. The gap in level with leading Asian football nations such as Japan, South Korea, Iran, or Australia remains considerable. Issues of physical fitness, ability to maintain form in long tournaments, and the stability of the national team through generational transitions are unsolved problems. The absence of Vietnamese players competing in major European leagues partly reflects limitations in international competitiveness.
In addition, football infrastructure remains inadequate. Stadiums meeting international standards are not many, and many localities still lack training grounds and living conditions for young players. The cost of organizing tournaments, investing in training, and developing grassroots football remains a burden for many units, requiring the joint efforts of the state, businesses, and society.
The training of referees and professional football management personnel also needs to be strengthened. The shortage of high-quality human resources in this field directly affects the quality of league operations and sustainable football development. International cooperation programs, professional exchanges, and updating modern football trends are necessary directions to enhance internal capacity.
Looking to the future, Vietnamese football aims to continue maintaining its position in the top group of Southeast Asia while striving to compete fairly with leading Asian teams and gradually step onto the world stage. To achieve this, a comprehensive, long-term strategy is needed, including strong investment in youth training, infrastructure upgrades, governance reform, and building a professional football culture.
The support of fans is a tremendous source of motivation. Fiery stands, sleepless nights following every ball of the national team, and street celebrations of victory have become familiar images, expressing the fierce love of Vietnamese people for the king of sports. It is precisely the trust and companionship of fans that has been and continues to be a great spiritual strength, urging players to constantly strive.
Management agencies need to continue perfecting the national competition system, ensuring fairness, transparency, and healthy competition. Building a clear development roadmap for each national team level, from U15, U17, U20 to the national team, will help create continuity and stability in playing style as well as personnel work. This is a key factor for Vietnamese football to develop sustainably and achieve even more success in the future.
In terms of commerce and media, Vietnamese football is increasingly attracting the attention of sponsors and media partners. Television rights, tournaments, and football events are increasingly valuable, opening important revenue sources to reinvest in development. Building the brand of the national team and clubs in a professional direction is the right path, helping to enhance the image of Vietnamese football on the regional and world map.
Another important aspect is the issue of player naturalization. The use of naturalized players can bring immediate quality supplementation, but it needs to be carefully considered so as not to affect the development opportunities of domestic players and the identity of the national team. There needs to be a reasonable, harmonious policy between developing internal strength and utilizing external resources, aiming for sustainable and long-term development.
National and regional youth tournaments such as the AFF U19, AFC U23, or international friendly matches are valuable opportunities for young players to gain experience and assert themselves. Organizing these tournaments well and creating conditions for young talents to play regularly and at quality will contribute importantly to the development of the country's football.
Alongside that, sports medicine, nutrition, and rehabilitation work for players need to be invested in appropriately. The physical fitness and ability to withstand competitive pressure of Vietnamese players remain points to improve in order to compete in top tournaments. Applying modern sports science and scientifically monitoring and evaluating players' physical condition will help improve performance and minimize injuries.
In summary, Vietnamese football is in a period of strong transformation, with many proud achievements and challenges to overcome. The combination of systematic development strategy, reasonable investment, professional governance, and the determination of the entire system will be the key for the country's football to continue reaching further, asserting its position on the continental stage and gradually stepping onto the world stage. Vietnamese fans have every right to hope for a brighter future for the king of sports, with new achievements, new generations of talent, and great dreams awaiting ahead.
